Fear no Failure, Be Brave in “Business Startups”
Dear School leaders, teachers, parents, students, ladies and gentlemen:
I am very delighted to be here to share the most impressive moments of your life. First of all, I congratulate on your graduation and your acquisition of degree. As a dropout, please allow me to cite Feng Gong’s lines to express my feeling: “I envy you to death!”
I was enrolled in NEU in 1990 and was supposed to graduate in 1994, but I dropped out in 1993 to start up business. During my college days, the world was in the development of multi-polarization featured by Disintegration of Soviet Union, Revolutions of 1989 and the end of cold war; there other big issues happened, for example, Mandela’s being elected as the first black president of South Africa after his 27-year imprisoned life, Gulf War, 1992 Consensus, emerging of Bill Gates and his Microsoft, use of Cellular phone and Beeper, etc., in which Deng Xiaoping’s southern tour speed, as the best background and chance for us, inspired and encouraged a considerable proportion of people to start a business, I was one of them.
The majority of the students present today were born after 1994, and enrolled 1992, so the time span when you studied in university, there were also many issues happened, such as the US’s returning to Asia, Mo Yan and Tu Youyou’s winning the Nobel Prize, smog issue, the popular Korean teleplay, Steve Jobs’s amazing invention, WeChat’s big influence on our life, Alibaba’s rapid development. Nowadays, Chinese government spares no efforts to encourage people to establish a business and to make innovations. This is maybe the best background and chance for you to start your business. As an experienced entrepreneur, I would like to share some my experience both on business and life.
 Fear no Failure
There is no royal road to success. Ren Zhengfei was cheated out of 2 million RMB in his 44 when doing business, and then was fired by the company; as a result, his wife divorced him, with 2 million debts, he had no choice but to live in the shanty of Shenzhen with his parents, brothers and sisters. But he is indomitable, and then established HUAWEI that is the member of the Fortune Global 500 now. Tu Youyou was diagnosed as having tuberculosis when she was 16, so she had to terminate her studies for two years. She has failed 190 times before artemisinin was successfully found and extracted. Tu was qualified as a doctoral advisor at her 71 and won the Nobel Prize when 85. Failure is common on the road of life. Muhammad Ali told us that the point is not how powerful your fist is, but you could still stand up after numberless fierce attacks, which is why he was called the King of Boxing. I totally agree with Ali. My Jangho failed to go public in 2008 for the first time that also caused some issues, throwing company in the risk of closing down; however, we did not give up and got through, finally not only we listed in 2011, but also our subsidiary-SUNDART HOLDINGS LIMITED listed in HK, and more we have also acquired two listed companies in Australia; therefore, Jangho has four listed companies now. I want you to know that failure doesn’t matter, it matters if you make them as the stepping stone to success.
Brave to Start a Business
Newborn calves are not afraid of tigers. You are still young, so you should not be swayed by considerations of gain and loss and afraid of being mocked and criticized. You should be brave to start your own business. I want stress that the starting a business I say is in the broad sense, neither simply means setting up a company nor merely to be a boss of company but to work hard to reflect your own value. You are not work for your boss, but yourself. Of course, I am not against your being a boss; I just hope that you do it with clear goal and caution. Now the society needs to cooperate and share, so the thought of Better be the head of a dog than the tail of a lion has gone out of fashion. To be a successful employee is also starting a business, such as Zhang Xiaolong, the father of WeChat, senior engineer of Tencent.
Attach Importance to Family
Family is the source of starting a business, the harbor when encountering the difficulties in work, the foundation of your thriving business. A happy family means wealth. What I have achieved today cannot be separated from my wife’s full support and her wholehearted dedication to family. Qian Zhongshu, a famous modern writer and literature researcher, praised his wife Yang Jiang as “the most virtuous wife, the most talented woman”. Their love and marriage is legend and widely circulated. I hope that you could learn from them, even better.

Mr. Liu and his wife Fu Haixia
Be Thankful
Whenever and wherever, we should always be thankful, for society, parents, teacher, Alma Mater, partner, those we know or we don’t know but inspired and encouraged us once, even those opponents and enemies who made us stronger.

Couple Liu&Fu Donated 50 Million RMB to NEU in 2012
2012 is NEU’s 90th celebration anniversary and also is my mother’s 70th birthday. In winter, I donated 50 million RMB to NEU for establishing Jangho Building College as well as a birthday present to my mum. The earlier donation occurred in 1998, the 75th celebration anniversary of NEU, I denoted 500,000 RMB out of my first pot of gold (1,000,000 RMB) for the use of Teaching Faculty Fellowship. Compared with the donation in 2012, the early one could reflect my gratitude more for the school and teachers.
I know an alumnus whose name is Chen Shoutong, now is a mechanical and electrical engineer in HK. He has no much money, but he expresses his love for NEU by ongoing introducing and persuading other businessmen or organization leaders in HK to sponsor his alma mater. I think his love for NEU is much more than mine. Gratitude cannot be measured by the amount of the money and things you do, but the constant grateful mind.
Remember Your Original Intention, Care about Society
When we were young, our parents told us to treat the people kindly; when we studied in school, our teachers educated us to do by our society friendly; when we work, environmentalist urges us to protect our earth well. I think these are our original intention. The more responsibility we have for our country and home, the less impoverished our society will be; the more concern and love we have for society, the less hatred, crime, terrorism and war will arise, as a result, our environment will become increasingly improved.

Finally, I want to remind you of a long-distance running race of NEU Sports Meet, where a short thin girl was encouraged by a song from her male classmates, and then turned the tables, winning the championship. Now, I provide you my encouragement, wishing you successful in your future life.
